I love summertime. The smell of fresh cut grass; flipflops; sitting on the deck in the evenings; BBQs with friends; summer dresses; flowers on the porch... The season holds a child-like appeal for me. However, living in Colorado, my favorite season long ago became fall.
Fall in Colorado isn't so different from summer, initially. I still mow the grass, and the flowers on the porch change from bright geraniums to yellow and orange mums. Flip flops are a year round staple for me, so that doesn't change. The difference is in the air: days are still warm but the nights are cool. Perfect for sitting on the deck in front of a fire, or snuggled up with a book inside next to the fireplace. The colors in the high country are brilliant, and even the radio station DJs boast reminders of the best days to drive into the mountains to see the splendor.
Fall brings us indoors for crockpot soup that's been cooking all day. Fall feels cozy, and warm, and footbally. Fall is when my grandgirls get one year older, and we start talking about their birthday parties and soccer games. Fall hiking is not too hot, and not yet too cold. Fall reminds me of that back-to-school anticipation of change, of moving into something new. We'll see....
