Once upon a time, I had great vision. I enjoyed the fact that although my three older sibs have had glasses since forever, I was little miss 20/20. Until about 10 minutes after I turned 40. That's when the blurrrrrr began. Reading text wasn't quite so crisp and sharp. I got prescription glasses but rarely bothered to wear them. Then.... as the early 40s left, so did my vision. I proceeded to buy multiple pairs of readers from Walgreens and left them in each room of the house (in some cute trendy colors, I might add). However.... eventually I had to own the fact that these $20 readers weren't cutting it any more.
BFFfromHS recently got glasses and contacts. She kept telling me how much I would LOVE having contacts! I took her word for it, and made an appointment. My trip to the eye doctor was frustrating- for myself and the eye doc. After trying 5 different types of lenses, I went home with a pair. Later that evening, it took a full 45 minutes to get the damn things out! After swearing I'd never put them in again, BFFfromHS called to ask how it was going. I told her I hated the contacts! She cajoled me into trying again, telling me I just had to get used to them. I promise, you'll love them!!!
On the drive to the re-check, I was seeing double as oncoming traffic passed. Not a good sign. It was pretty obvious that the eye doc was losing patience as he told me there was only one other type of contact to try for me: One contact would be far sighted and the other near sighted. He said eventually my brain would accommodate and correct my vision. Well.... being blonde, this seemed to be taking longer for my brain than I expected because I sat the entire church service that Sunday closing one eye, then the other. I have no doubt that Pastor thought I was winking at him. Ugh....
Back to the eye doc, who was out and I had to see his (very hot) associate, who convinced me to try daily wear instead of monthly contacts. Not sure if it was his studly charm or the actual contact, but this set worked. I could see!
The next morning I woke up anxious to put my contacts in before getting ready for work. To my horror, I noticed something that up until then had escaped me. I have wrinkles!! Holy Hell where did they come from?? For the last 10 years I convinced myself I looked pretty good for my age. Well....clearly that was only because I was so blind that I couldn't see all the damn wrinkles!!
I promptly removed the paper thin magnifying glasses from each eye and tossed them in the trash. I put on a swipe of lipstick, tousled my hair, and lifted my chin. I threw my Walgreens readers into my purse as I took one last look in the mirror then headed out the door. I smiled at my magical fix- no more wrinkles!! Now I just need to make sure my shoes match next time...
With Faith and Admitted Narcissism, ~Shugie
When I was a little girl, I believed in fairy tales... that fantasy of what life would be. White dress, a prince charming who would carry me away to a castle on a hill. I would lie in bed at night and close my eyes and had complete and utter faith. Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy, Prince Charming, they were so close I could taste them, but one day the fairy tale disappeared. It's hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely because we all have that smallest bit of hope, of faith, that one day we will open our eyes and it will come true. Then one day you realize that the fairy tale may be slightly different than you dreamed. The castle, well, it may not be a castle. This life, with all of its complexities, may be the fairy tale after all, because the journey is the best part. It's Happily Ever After...right now.
Kisses and love gets trapped in there...
